How to Create 5 Simple Hydrangea Arrangements

These simple hydrangea flower arrangements come together in minutes with just 3-4 different types of flowers!

Do you have a favorite flower?  Mine are probably hydrangeas. I just love them and always have. We had lots of hydrangeas in our wedding 25 years ago and I have loved them ever since. We’ve always had hydrangeas in our yard so I’m lucky in that I can cut them and bring them inside to enjoy. (Side note- if you do this, just make sure you dunk them in a big bowl of water to get rid of all the little 🐞 bugs!)

How to Pick Your Flowers 

I almost always buy my flowers one of 3 places: Trader Joe’s, Costco/Sam’s or the grocery store. They have great prices and usually have plenty of options. 

When putting together an arrangement, I usually pick 3 different varieties of flowers.  When you’re picking your flowers, make sure you look at the date on the package and make sure the leaves look pretty healthy.  After you get your flowers home, give them a clean cut with a sharp knife. I usually fully dunk the head of my hydrangeas in a big bowl of water before arranging them. 

Hydrangea Flower Arrangements 

Here are 5 different arrangements using hydrangeas.  In all of these cases I used hydrangeas as my base flower. When arranging your flowers, put your base flowers in first (usually a bunch of 3), then add the others. It’s truly as simple as that!

1. For this table I picked a bunch of blue hydrangeas, a package of white hydrangeas, and one bunch of green dianthus balls. Sometimes your Trader Joe’s or grocery store will just call them Green Balls.
2. I love the look of a monochromatic arrangement. Here I picked flowers that are similar in color.  It makes for a really gorgeous look that can be dressy or casual.  I love this arrangement with white hydrangeas, white ranunculus and white roses. So pretty!! 
3. This arrangement uses white hydrangeas, green dianthus balls and yellow tulips. It looked perfect with these green bamboo placements and blue and white plates!
4. Then sometimes you’ll want an arrangement that pops with color like this one. Here I used green and blue hydrangeas, hot pink roses and sunflowers.  
5. One of my favorite tables was one I put together with antique mall plates mixed with our wedding china. I wanted to bring out the hot pink and orange in the plates, so I used bright orange roses and hot pink tulips with white hydrangeas. So easy to put together and so perfect with the tablescape!!

Aren’t hydrangeas so beautiful!! They look so pretty all by themselves as well.

How to Care for Your Flowers

It’s important to take care of your pretty arrangements!  The biggest things you can do to prolong the life of your flowers are:

1. Start with cutting the stems with a sharp knife and give them the flower food provided.  If you have time, dunk your hydrangeas (blooms- ie upside down) in a bowl of water and leave them for a few hours.
2. Give them fresh water every day. 
3. Spray them with Crowning Glory spray after you’ve arranged them.  My last hydrangea arrangement lasted 3 weeks!!  I’m not kidding. Crazy. 
4. If your hydrangeas get droopy, emerge the entire bloom in water and leave for several hours/overnight. Then give the stem a fresh cut and put them in clean water.
