How to Create the Perfect Cinco de Mayo Tablescape
Cinco de Mayo is the perfect occasion to bring bold colors, festive details, and a little playful charm to your table! Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or a casual get-together, a thoughtfully styled tablescape can set the mood for a fun and memorable celebration. My younger daughter was born on 5-05-05, so we get to celebrate her birthday and Cinco de Mayo at the same time! Here’s what I used to create the perfect Cinco de Mayo Tablescape for her birthday last year.
The Tablescape
I started with a buffalo check tablecloth as the base, adding a lively contrast to the vibrant elements on top. I also love the idea of using serapes as a runner/tablecloth. Woven chargers are a great backdrop for my favorite blue and white plates. To embrace the theme, I incorporated mini maracas and sombrero hats throughout the table. I placed a mini sombrero hat on top of each plate and added a fun place card to each setting.
The mini maracas are scattered throughout the table and make a great a party favor for your guests to take home. Everyday cobalt blue water glasses add another pop of color to the table. Simple blue napkins work great with so many other bright and happy colors going on. My mom got me the painted napkin rings while traveling, but I found some other cute ones that would be perfect linked here.
The Centerpiece
For the centerpiece, I started with mason jars filled with grocery store flowers to add some fun color. Did you know that you can save a bunch of money by looking at the discounted section of your grocery store’s floral shop? I spent no more than $10 on the flowers for this table! A lot of the reduced price flowers will still last a week or more, but are discounted 50%!
I love searching through my plethora of tabletop items and coming up with fun ways to use things. Several years ago I bought a bunch of bright blue lanterns for an outdoor party. They work perfectly in the centerpiece for this Cinco de Mayo theme. Yay! Can you guess my favorite unexpected detail? Colorful bell peppers! I bought a package of 6 at Costco and scattered them throughout the centerpiece. They add a fresh, authentic feel while complementing the party theme. The combination of flowers, lanterns and produce keeps the table festive and full of color.
The Menu
A Cinco de Mayo celebration wouldn’t be complete without a delicious menu! One of my favorite make ahead meals is creamy chicken enchiladas. I serve them with homemade salsa, black beans and our favorite Mexican Caesar Salad from Gimme Some Oven. Other great easy options are tacos, or a DIY nacho bar, allowing guests to customize their plates with all the best toppings. I love having a cocktail and mocktail option for guests.
