Simple Hydrangea Arrangements that Last for Weeks
This simple hydrangea arrangement is made in a few minutes and will last for a few weeks with proper care.
Even though I had hydrangeas in my wedding arrangements, I truly fell in love with this beautiful flower when Scott and I lived in Birmingham as newlyweds.. Oh how we loved our 100 year old, 1,000 square foot home.
It was in a historic part of town and there were the most lovely hydrangeas everywhere you looked.
Blue ones.
Pink Ones.
Oak Leaf.

Did you know that the color of the hydrangea bloom is determined by the soil? If the soil is acidic, the blooms will be blue. If the soil is alkaline, the blooms will be pink. We had 7 hydrangea bushes in our last home in Texas and they were beautiful. They were all pink, but slightly different shades of pink. I loved cutting them and bringing them inside to enjoy.

Caring for Hydrangeas
Store bought hydrangeas can be a bit picky. They really like water and even like to be sprayed with, or submerged in, water. Here are some step by step instructions on how to keep your hydrangeas happy.
- When you bring them home, fully submerge the blooms in water. I know it sounds silly, but it really helps hydrate them before you put them in a vase. I typically do this for an hour or more.
- Cut the stems at an angle. This gives the stems more surface area to “drink” the water.
- Use your flower food. Just like we need food for nourishment, hydrangeas do, too.
- After you arrange them, make sure you give them clean water every day/every other day and use a spray bottle to mist the blooms and petals.
Simple Hydrangea Arrangement Steps
- Buy your hydrangeas. I usually buy mine at Trader Joe’s or Costco. They have the best prices. A little tip for you- if you need a large quantity of hydrangeas, or any flower for that matter!- order online from Costco.com. You save a bundle by buying in bulk.
- Decide what vase or container you are using. I used a clear cylinder vase for this arrangement which allows you to see the pretty green leaves.
- Get a very sharp knife or sharp kitchen shears and floral tape.
- Take off the bottom leaves and set them aside for your arrangement.
- Use the floral tape to make a grid. This helps keep your blooms in place
- Take the leaves and wrap them around the inside of the vase
- Add your hydrangea stems
How easy- and pretty- right?! I do love the simplicity of just hydrangeas. They are so understated, yet elegant. They brighten any room and make a space feel cozy.
Sometimes, you can follow these steps and your hydrangeas will still wilt. Ugh! When this happens, I dunk the heads in a big bowl of water and leave them overnight. When you wake up they will look good as new! Another trick is to keep your arrangement in the fridge. As long as your refrigerator isn’t too cold, they will keep a lot longer. When our house was on the market in Texas, I would put my arrangements in the fridge every night before bed and they lasted a couple of weeks!
