How I Worked Through Seasonal Depression

Social media is a funny thing. We typically see the highlight reels of peoples lives. They share the pretty, the good, the happy and all the high points in life. However, we know that that is just not what’s truly going on. We all have moments of sadness and despair, and sometimes these moments turn into seasons instead of just days.

A Hard Season/Year for Me…

I felt prompted to share a little bit of the hard and real in my life in January and for whatever reason just didn’t share it. I woke up early this morning thinking I needed to post something in hopes that maybe it will help someone who is feeling down.

I will be as brief as I can, but I just want to encourage you that if you are feeling down, seasonal depression is a real thing, but it doesn’t last forever.

2025 had some really low points for me and January through March were the worst. Here’s what got me through the hard days!

6 Steps That Helped with Seasonal Depression

  1. My Faith. I believe that God is always with us and always for us. I spent a lot of time praying and spending time reading the Bible searching for hope. Romans 12:12; Psalm 61:2
  2. Journaling.  Sometimes when we just write down our thoughts or say them out loud, they lose their power. Journaling was very therapeutic for me.
  3. Counseling. I believe it’s worth every penny. I had a kind woman walk me through how to get out of the pit of despair and I came out the other side healthier than when I went into it. Romans 12:2
  4. Talking with your spouse and trusted friends.  Sometimes we feel like our spouse can read our mind, but that is just not the case. We have to be authentic in sharing the hard things with them so they can listen, encourage us and pray for us. I shared my heart with my husband and a few close friends, and that was super helpful.
  5. Being outside.  A little sunshine and a good walk can work wonders! I believe in the power of vitamin C and exercise. It helps not only our physical health but mental health as well.
  6. Speaking the truth of God over my life and circumstances. 2 Corinthiams 10:5 tells us to take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ. Or as The Message Version puts it, “We fit every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ.” I think this verse means different things to different people, but in this scenario, when I am spiraling and starting to believe the lies the enemy is throwing at me- you’ll always be down- you aren’t making a difference so why try- why are you even doing what you are doing?…I have to immediately speak truth over my life. Say my blessings out loud. What does the bible say is true about me, my anxious heart and my circumstances? Philippians 4:6-8. Love The Message Version of these verses!

Philippians 4:6-8, The Message

“Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.”

Isn’t that so beautifully written!? So there you go. There were a lot of blessings in 2025 as well, but the year definitely started off rocky. I wanted to share about my struggle with seasonal depression because sometimes when you are really down, you feel like you’ll stay there forever and that’s just not the case! Praying that this post is an encouragement and help to whoever reads it🤍
