How to Make Decoupage Pumpkins in 10 Minutes!
If you get tired of plain old white and orange pumpkins, I have the perfect easy and fun craft for you! My super neat and artistic friend, Kimberly, hosted a GNO years ago where she had us do these fun pumpkins as a craft. Kimberly also had us marble pumpkins with nail polish! Check out that fun pumpkin craft, too! I loved them so much that I have made them every year since then! Here’s a step by step guide to making pretty decoupage pumpkins in 10 minutes!
Pumpkin Supplies
Faux pumpkins. White or light colored pumpkins work best. I bought mine from Amazon, Michael’s and The Dollare Tree.
Mod Podge. You can use glossy or satin finish. You can get Mod Podge at Walmart, Amazon or any craft store.
Napkins of your choice. I’ve used fall napkins, blue and white napkins, clorful napkins. Get creative and use whatever color palette you love!
Paintbrush . I use foam brushes, but it doesn’t really matter what kind you use. I love the flexibility of throwing away the foam ones and not having to clean them when I’m done!
Gold Paint, optional. Sometimes it’s fun to paint the stem of the pumpkins silver or gold!
Decoupage Pumpkin Steps
Cover your area with a drop cloth or plastic trash bag to protect your working space. You can also use a throw away plastic tray like I did.
Take a paper towel and wipe off the pumpkin to make sure it is clean.
Pick your napkin and separate the napkin as seen above. You can still make the decoupage pumpkins without separating the napkins, you’ll just need to use a little extra Mod Podge. Cut the napkin into smaller pieces. You can do this however you want. There is no right or wrong way!
Apply Mod Podge to your pumpkin a little bit at a time with the paintbrush. See photo. Take a piece of napkin and smooth it onto the wet area. Try and get most of the wrinkles out (but it’s ok if you don’t!) and make sure you you press the napkin into all the grooves.
Keep this process going until your pumpkin is fully covered.
Once finished, let your pumpkin dry. Then, I like to put another layer of Mod Podge over the pumpkin. Make sure the pieces are dry so they don’t tear when you apply this last coat.
If you’d like, you can paint the stem of your pumpkin with gold paint. It’s a fun touch and makes your pumpkin stand out a little bit.
Set your pumpkin in a place to fully dry before setting it on your table. In Colorado, the air is dry, so mine only took a few hours to dry completely.
How to Display Your Pumpkins
I like to do several pumpkins in different patterns and display them throughout our home. Last year I hosted a dinner party and did small decoupage pumpkins as party favors. I put them in the center of my guests plates with a cute little place card attached with twine. Such a fun gift for your friend to take home with them. I used decoupage pumpkins on our entry way table and dining room table as well. You can pick napkins to match your decor and spread them throughout your home.
