A Simple Way You Can Show Your Kids and Spouse Love This Valentine’s Day 

With these affirmation hearts, you can show your kids and spouse encouragement and love this Valentine’s Day.  

How does it make you feel when someone sends you an encouraging text or note? My guess is it makes your heart swell and makes you feel really good! I actually wrote a blog post on the lost art of handwritten notes because it’s so important. Words are very powerful and can truly impact someone’s life!

5 Love Languages

Have you ever taken the five love languages test or read the book? Years ago Gary Chapman wrote a book called- you guessed it- The 5 Love Languages. He states there are 5 ways we give and receive love. They are: words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch.

I have taken the test and I had my family do it as well. Turns out we all really appreciate words of affirmation! If you’re curious, here’s a link to take the test. Knowing how you best receive love, and how those you care about receive love, really helps you communicate with each other well.

Valentine Hearts

Several years ago my good friend, Kristin, shared with me something she does for her boys and husband. starting on February 1. She takes paper hearts and writes an encouraging note to her kids and husband each day or two and hangs them on a ribbon on their door. It’s a simple and easy way to show love! I liked the idea so much that I started doing it for my girls and husband as well.

Supplies Needed

One of the great things about these Valentine Hearts is you can order them- and the ribbon- from Amazon and you’ll have it all in a couple of days. Here is what you’ll need:

• 3-6 inch paper hearts. I‘ve used all different colors!
• Ribbon to hold the hearts together
• Stick pins to attach the hearts to the ribbon
• Tape to attatch the ribbon to your loved one’s door

How to Put Together Hearts

The first thing I do on February 1 is cut a long string of ribbon and tape it to my husband or girls bathroom door.

Each day or two, I write an encouraging note, or a descriptive word on a heart. It might be something like,

“I love how you care for and encourage your sister!”

Or 

“I am grateful for the way you work hard at school!”

Or 

“You are a wonderful friend who takes time to listen to, and encourage others!”

Some years I’ve written a word or two that describes them like:

~kind

~a great encourager

~thoughtful

~faithful…

Then I attach the heart to the ribbon. Since my girls are now in college, I will send them a ribbon and individual envelopes with a heart for each day or so that they will add to their ribbon. You secure the hearts with small pins as you can see in the photos above. By the time Valentine’s Day comes they will see on their hearts so many ways that they bring joy to you and others.

On Valentine’s Day, you write a longer letter on the last heart affirming who they are, and all the beautiful things you see in them.

Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for you to show others that you love and care for them. With this simple way to show love, your kids and spouse will get a huge smile on their face and know how much you delight in them.
