The Primary Bedroom- Making our new house our home

Using furniture we already owned and bedding from Ballard Designs, I created a bright and cheery primary bedroom we enjoy.

We have a really good size bedroom, but our furniture just didn’t fit well.

Who knew that houses with basements have vents in the floor! Not this Texan!

This became a bit of a conundrum because the places where the vents are just happen to be where we thought we would place our furniture. Oops!

Here is the bedroom before…

This bright primary bedroom features a spacious setting with a large bed, beige headboard, and patterned pillows. Nightstands with lamps adorn each side, while armchairs and a small table sit near the window overlooking trees. A ceiling fan graces the light wood floor and soft pink rug below.

We decided to buy a simple open shelving unit to go where we planned on putting a large dresser.

The previous owners had pretty gold shelves so I did a good old Google Search and found a similar one I like.

I think it looks pretty in the space! It holds some of our family pictures, art, and some of my collection of blue and white porcelain.

In a bright primary bedroom, a brass shelving unit showcases framed photos, a potted plant, decorative jars with blue and white patterns, and collectible plates. A small wooden box and a few stacked books also grace the shelves.

There is an art alcove when you first walk into our bedroom. Our younger daughter is a very talented artist and painted the most colorful piece that fits the space perfectly. I added a few blue and white pieces from The Enchanted Home.

We are still using our mahogany bed we received as a wedding gift from my parents 24 years ago. In my opinion it is timeless and a great backdrop for our crisp white bedding. I have always loved the idea of white bedding, but was always too chicken to take the plunge. Have I mentioned my husband is messy?!

Well, I decided it was time and after looking at several options, I purchased bedding from Ballard Designs. (I never pay full price Ballard! They seem to have at least 20% off most of the time). I love the pretty cornflower blue scallops mixed with the buffalo check pillow shams and bedskirt. I think the look is timeless and fresh. The cornflower blue scallop detail on the duvet as well as the shams is delightful!

Both bedside tables are from antique stores in Texas. I do love matching tables but I think these add a little personality to the room. The most important thing to think about if you don’t have matching bedside chests or tables is that the height of them is about the same- typically 30 inches. The barley twist table was one of our first purchases as newlyweds and has moved with us 5 times. I don’t think I can ever pair with it! The oak table is from my favorite antique store in McKinney, Texas.

A bright primary bedroom features a cozy bed with blue and white checkered pillows and floral cushions. The wooden headboard complements the elegant white bedding, while a lamp, mirror, and decorative shelf filled with various items enhance one side of the room.

The gorgeous blue “Kapila” lamps are from Visual Comfort. For a few years now I have had my eye on these lamps! I love blue (I bet you knew that by now!) and the interesting shape of the lamps, brass base and white shade make them so unique and eye catching. Even though they have a modern flair to them, I feel like they work really well in our more traditional bedroom.

I was THRILLED when I walked into neighborhood consignment store in Texas a few months before we moved and found them with the price tags still on them! Apparently this store takes returns from One King’s Lane and Z Gallerie, then sells them at a fraction of the original cost!! The lamps I had been wanting were right there…and brand new!!!
How fun is that!?? So very happy!!

I had them made with a blue linen trim and feel they really brighten the space!

I hope to purchase a comfy upholstered chair and ottoman in the future to go in the corner of the room. I think this set is so pretty, but not in our price range…

Here’s how it looks today!

It is such a light and bright room and feels dreamy to me. I added some white roses in blue and white jars and voila! The space is just about finished.

I loved creating our bright and cheery primary bedroom.
