Dining Room Before & After: Creating a Warm and Inviting Space

Some of my favorite memories were made in our dining room. When we were first married and living in Birmingham, Alabama, we rented the cutest old house with the perfect little dining room. We have the fondest memories of having friends from our Sunday school class over for games and pizza and we hosted our first Christmas party in that little room, too. I know the kitchen is often called the heart of the home, but I have to say the dining room is pretty special, too! 27 years later, having a dining room is still a non-negotiable part of looking for a home.

My Love of Dining Rooms

I have always loved a dining room and every home we’ve lived in (6 total) has had one. One thing I knew while we were searching for a home in Colorado was that I wanted a formal dining room. Although many newer homes no longer include one, I simply couldn’t imagine living without it. Around our table is where stories are shared, laughter fills the room, and some of life’s sweetest memories are made. Creating a warm, welcoming space for those moments has always been important to me.
When we first moved in, (first picture above) this space felt a little too modern for my taste. It had good bones, but it didn’t yet have that cozy, collected feeling that truly makes a house feel like home.
Today I’m sharing a look at the before and after, along with the simple changes that made the biggest difference. My hope is that it gives you inspiration and a few easy ideas you can use in your own home.

Dining Room Before: A Space with Potential

When we first moved in, I immediately fell in love with the beautiful windows in the dining room and all of the natural light. The room had great bones, but it felt a little too modern and unfinished for my personal style. I tend to gravitate toward classic, layered spaces that feel warm and welcoming, especially in rooms where family and friends gather. I knew this room didn’t need a complete makeover—it simply needed a few thoughtful additions to add texture, warmth, and character while letting the beautiful architecture shine.

Dining Room After: Warm, Inviting and Full of Character

What a difference a few intentional changes can make. This space now feels layered, collected, and so much more welcoming. It’s classic, southern and ready to host a dinner party, holiday, or gathering of friends!
It’s become one of my favorite rooms in our home—not because it’s perfect, but because it feels lived in, warm and inviting. In fact, the first gathering we hosted after we moved here I received the sweetest compliment from a neighbor. She said, “Julie, your home is so warm and welcoming.” That’s exactly how I want people to feel when they are here.

What Made the BIGGEST Difference…

ADDING AN ANTIQUE RUG
One of the biggest transformations came from adding an antique rug. It instantly grounded the space and brought in warmth and texture.
A rug can completely change how a room feels, and this one made everything feel more cozy and connected. I bought this rug over 20 years ago and it’s moved with us from house to house. Some friends have ordered rugs from Locust Lane Rugs and have been really pleased. They are more modern, but still beautiful!

A BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE FRENCH DRESSER
Bringing in an antique French dresser added so much character and charm. I love mixing old and new pieces, and this one truly makes the room feel collected over time. It was our first nice antique purchase and is so special to me. It also practical in that it provides a beautiful place to style dishes, flowers, or seasonal décor. (AND hold a bunch of my china, chargers, silver, candlesticks…:) It’s my favorite antique in our home and the runner up is our dining room table. It was a gift from my parents when they downsized. Fun fact, our dining room chairs were also my parents that they bought at a garage sale as newlyweds over 50 years ago!

CUSTOM ROMAN SHADES + DRAPES

This was such a game changer. The custom Roman shades and drapes softened the entire room and made it feel instantly more polished and inviting. I think fabric brings in so much warmth and character to a space.

The drapes and shades add texture and that layered look I always love in a room. I had a workroom in Texas make them since I wasn’t familiar with places here in Colorado. For other rooms in our home I ordered custom Drapes and shades from Two Pages. I am really pleased with how they turned out.

I have shared Two Pages curtains before. We have the pinch pleated drapes in our living room, breakfast room and bedroom! I love them and you can’t beat the price point. I also have one of their Roman Shades in our kitchen. Send me an email if you want to know the colors and trim I chose.

When our girls were 3 years old we had custom portraits made. They wore the same dress, but the portraits are slightly different. They are some of favorite treasured pieces and when I think, “What would I grab in a fire!?” these come to mind. I love antique paintings and the warmth and character they add to a home. I’ve collected art for years and included a few of my favorites in our dining room. Fresh flowers are always my finishing touch. They bring life, color, and beauty into the space in such an effortless way. Here are some of my favorite flower arrangements on the blog. I also added a brass chandelier that is perfect for the space! I love it so much it will go with us to our next home as well…

This transformation is such a reminder that you don’t need to completely start over and buy all new things to create a beautiful home. Sometimes it’s just about layering in pieces you already have and love, adding warmth, and creating a space that feels welcoming to you and your family. The most meaningful homes aren’t the ones that are perfectly styled—they’re the ones filled with love, memories, and moments shared around the table.
